Darren Swain is a former state legislator committed to public service and visionary leadership. He was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates representing the 24th Legislative District serving on the Commerce and Government Matters Committee and then subsequently appointed to the House of Delegates by Governor Martin O’Malley and served on the Judiciary Committee.
Mr. Swain has professional experience in both the public and private sectors, where he served as a senior level economic development assistant in the Office of the Prince George’s County Executive Wayne K. Curry, the 1st African American to hold that position. He was a management consultant for the Suburban Washington Small Business Development Center in the Office of the Prince George’s County Minority Business Development Division where he played major roles in the development of projects including the Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, now FedEx Field and Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, now the Wayne K. Curry Sports and Learning Complex.
Mr. Swain assisted in establishing We the People, a non-profit community advocacy organization based in Landover, Maryland serving as its Executive Director as well as the LEARN Foundation (Landover Education and Athletic Recreation Non-Profit), a community based scholarship entity born out of the FedEx Field negotiations. His private sector experience includes serving as Vice-president for corporate development of Wise Technologies, a wireless technology firm and served as a Senior level management consultant with a leading African American CPA firm, advocating policy issues on Capitol Hill.
Mr. Swain served as Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations and Director of Regional Giving for Bowie State University and volunteered as a guest lecturer and 1st Year Seminar Instructor as well as advisor to various student groups on campus. He is a published contributing author on HBCU Fundraising, Lasting Impressions; Laying the Foundation for Engaged and Philanthropic Future Alumni (2016).
Currently Mr. Swain leads his own Consultant Firm, DMS & Associates and serves as Deputy Campaign Manager for Prince George’s County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks. He also holds leadership posts on several non-profit boards, including Bowie State University National Alumni Association (President), W3PV (Senior Advisor) and the Lottsford, Legend Glenn, Glensford Recreation Association, Inc. (Vice President).
Mr. Swain attended Prince George’s County public schools and prides himself as being a product of Columbia Park, a subdivision of Landover, Maryland. Mr. Swain is a two-time graduate of Bowie State University with a Masters of Arts in administrative management (Public Policy) and a Bachelor of Science in political science. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Sigma Chapter. He resides in Bowie, Maryland with his son Darrien.
