BOWIE, MD — September 25, 2025 – The Bowie State University Foundation (BSUF) proudly announces Charles Exum Jr. as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors, succeeding outgoing Chairman Alfonzo Powell. The Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to Mr. Powell for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service, which significantly advanced the mission and impact of BSUF.

In his new role, Mr. Exum will guide the Foundation in building and sustaining private support for research, scholarships, athletics, health and wellness, and educational innovations that advance teaching, learning, and the overall welfare of the university.
A proud two-time graduate of Bowie State University, Mr. Exum holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). With over 20 years of experience in the information technology sector, he has held key leadership positions, including Senior Leader, Systems Analyst, Migration Specialist, and Enterprise Architect. He is also a Microsoft Systems Engineer, Microsoft Certified Trainer, and Cisco Certified Network Associate, showcasing his deep expertise in technology and innovation.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Exum has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and nonprofit leadership. He founded the Bowie Mitchellville MD Diamond Foundation, serving as its President from 2006–2014, and has been actively involved in Toastmasters International, where he served as President of the Landover Toastmasters and competed at both the local and regional levels.
Mr. Exum’s guiding philosophy stems from a deeply rooted belief in service and collective progress.
“I truly believe that when we help each other, we go further. The mantra of service was instilled in me early on, and I firmly believe we have an inherent responsibility to reach back and help those who need our support,” said Exum. “As Shirley Chisholm once said, ‘Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.’”
As the immediate past Vice Chairman of the BSU Foundation Board, Mr. Exum brings extensive institutional knowledge and a proven record of leadership. Under his chairmanship, the Foundation aims to expand philanthropic efforts, foster stronger alumni engagement, and continue driving resources that enhance Bowie State’s mission as Maryland’s first Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
Outgoing Chairman Alfonzo Powell expressed his confidence in Mr. Exum’s leadership, stating,
“Charles has been an instrumental part of the Foundation’s growth and success. His passion for Bowie State University and its students is unmatched, and I am confident he will continue to move the Foundation forward.”
The Bowie State University Foundation invites alumni, donors, and community partners to join in celebrating this leadership transition and to continue supporting initiatives that empower students and strengthen the university’s legacy of excellence.
